Biliverdin reductase (BLVRA)
Cofactors used
What it does, reaction by reaction
Heme Degradation (Bilirubin Pathway) Amino Acid & Nitrogen Metabolism · Reticuloendothelial system, liver ER, gut
Biliverdin IXα + NADPH + H⁺ → bilirubin IXα + NADP⁺
Converts Biliverdin IX-alpha NADPH H+ into Bilirubin IX-alpha NADP+
› Notes
Cytosolic biliverdin reductase reduces the central methine bridge to form unconjugated bilirubin. NADPH is required; bilirubin is hydrophobic and is released into plasma bound tightly but noncovalently to albumin.
