Arginase I (ARG1)
Cofactors used
Clinical / pharmacological. Argininaemia: spastic diplegia, less severe hyperammonaemia
What it does, reaction by reaction
Urea Cycle Amino Acid & Nitrogen Metabolism · Mitochondrial matrix + cytosol
L-arginine + H₂O → L-ornithine + urea
Converts Arginine H2O into Ornithine Urea
› Notes
Cytosolic arginase I (ARG1), a manganese-containing enzyme, hydrolyzes arginine to urea and ornithine. This essentially irreversible final step regenerates ornithine for mitochondrial import and releases urea into blood for renal excretion.
Showing all 1 reactions.
What accelerates and inhibits it
Regulation is pathway-specific, so each context is listed separately
Urea Cycle
Listed there as: Arginase I
Arginine availability; manganese
Product accumulation; severe hepatic dysfunction
Long-term expression rises with increased amino-acid catabolism; predominantly indirect hormonal control
