AICAR transformylase (ATIC)
Cofactors used
What it does, reaction by reaction
One-Carbon Metabolism (Folate Cycle) Amino Acid & Nitrogen Metabolism · Cytosol + mitochondrion
10-Formyl-THF + AICAR โ formyl-AICAR + THF
Converts 10-Formyl-THF AICAR into FAICAR Tetrahydrofolate (THF)
› Notes
AICAR transformylase (ATIC) donates the second formyl group required for inosine monophosphate synthesis. This reaction is followed by cyclization to IMP by the IMP cyclohydrolase activity of ATIC.
Purine De Novo Synthesis (IMP synthesis through to AMP/GMP) Nucleotide Metabolism · Cytosol
AICAR โ 5-formamidoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide (FAICAR)
› Notes
AICAR transformylase catalyzes AICAR + 10-formyl-THF โ FAICAR + THF. The donated formyl carbon becomes C2 of the purine ring.
