Galactokinase (GALK1)
Cofactors used
Clinical / pharmacological. Galactokinase deficiency: isolated cataracts
What it does, reaction by reaction
Galactose Metabolism Carbohydrate Metabolism · Cytosol
Galactose + ATP → galactose-1-phosphate + ADP
Converts Galactose ATP into Galactose-1-phosphate ADP
› Notes
Galactokinase (GALK1) requires ATP and Mg2+ and phosphorylates galactose at carbon 1. This is effectively irreversible and traps galactose intracellularly.
Showing all 1 reactions.
What accelerates and inhibits it
Regulation is pathway-specific, so each context is listed separately
Galactose Metabolism
Listed there as: Galactokinase
Galactose availability
No established major physiological allosteric inhibitor
No major acute hormonal control
