Cytosolic uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (UROD)

1 reactions · 1 pathways

Clinical / pharmacological. Porphyria cutanea tarda: photosensitive blistering, tea-coloured urine (commonest porphyria)

What it does, reaction by reaction

Heme Biosynthesis (Porphyrin Pathway) Amino Acid & Nitrogen Metabolism · Mitochondrion + cytosol

step 5 Irreversible

Uroporphyrinogen III → coproporphyrinogen III + 4 CO₂

Converts Uroporphyrinogen III into Coproporphyrinogen III CO2

Notes

Cytosolic uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (UROD) decarboxylates the four acetate side chains to methyl groups. No ATP or redox cofactor is required; this is an essentially irreversible decarboxylation.
