Cytosolic malate dehydrogenase

2 reactions · 2 pathways

What it does, reaction by reaction

Gluconeogenesis Carbohydrate Metabolism · Cytosol + mitochondrion + ER

step 3 Reversible

Malate + NAD+ ↔ oxaloacetate + NADH + H+

Converts Malate NAD+ into Oxaloacetate NADH H+

Notes

Cytosolic malate dehydrogenase regenerates oxaloacetate and produces cytosolic NADH. The malate transport step itself is carrier-mediated rather than enzymatic; the two dehydrogenase reactions constitute the redox shuttle.

Fatty Acid Synthesis (De Novo Lipogenesis) Lipid Metabolism · Cytosol

step 3 Irreversible/directional

Oxaloacetate + NADH + H+ → malate + NAD+

Converts Oxaloacetate NADH H+ into Malate NAD+

Notes

Cytosolic malate dehydrogenase reduces oxaloacetate, using NADH. Malate may return to mitochondria or be used to generate NADPH.
