Bacterial beta-glucuronidases + reductases (gut microbiota)

What it does, reaction by reaction

Heme Degradation (Bilirubin Pathway) Amino Acid & Nitrogen Metabolism · Reticuloendothelial system, liver ER, gut

step 5 Irreversible/directional

Conjugated bilirubin → unconjugated bilirubin → urobilinogen

Converts Conjugated bilirubin into Unconjugated bilirubin

Notes

Intestinal bacterial β-glucuronidases deconjugate bilirubin glucuronides, and bacterial reductases convert bilirubin to colorless urobilinogen. These are microbial rather than human enzymatic steps; no host ATP is directly consumed.
