Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORD)

1 reactions · 1 pathways

Clinical / pharmacological. Low in lens/retina/nerve, so sorbitol is trapped in diabetes

What it does, reaction by reaction

1 reactions

Sorbitol / Polyol Pathway Carbohydrate Metabolism · Cytosol

step 2 Reversible

Sorbitol + NAD+ -> fructose + NADH + H+

Converts Sorbitol NAD+ into Fructose NADH H+

Notes

Absent or low in lens, retina, kidney and Schwann cells, so sorbitol is trapped there; osmotic damage underlies diabetic cataract, retinopathy and neuropathy. Seminal vesicles use this route to make fructose for sperm.
