Phosphoglucomutase

What it does, reaction by reaction

Galactose Metabolism Carbohydrate Metabolism · Cytosol

step 6 Reversible

Glucose-1-phosphate ↔ glucose-6-phosphate

Converts Glucose-1-phosphate into Glucose-6-phosphate

› Notes

Phosphoglucomutase reversibly forms glucose-6-phosphate through a glucose-1,6-bisphosphate intermediate. The product can enter glycolysis, glycogenesis, or, in liver, be converted to free glucose by glucose-6-phosphatase.

Glycogenesis (Glycogen Synthesis) Carbohydrate Metabolism · Cytosol (glycogen particle)

step 2 Reversible

Glucose-6-phosphate ↔ glucose-1-phosphate

Converts Glucose-6-phosphate into Glucose-1-phosphate

› Notes

Phosphoglucomutase reversibly transfers the phosphate through a glucose-1,6-bisphosphate intermediate; a catalytic phosphoserine is primed by glucose-1,6-bisphosphate. This reaction directs glucose carbon toward activated-sugar formation.

Glycogenolysis (Glycogen Breakdown) Carbohydrate Metabolism · Cytosol + ER (liver)

step 4 Reversible

Glucose-1-phosphate ↔ glucose-6-phosphate

Converts Glucose-1-phosphate into Glucose-6-phosphate

› Notes

Cytosolic phosphoglucomutase reversibly transfers the phosphate via glucose-1,6-bisphosphate. In muscle, glucose-6-phosphate enters glycolysis; in liver it is prepared for export.
