Glutamate decarboxylase (GAD65/GAD67)
Cofactors used
Clinical / pharmacological. B6-dependent; anti-GAD antibodies in stiff-person syndrome and T1DM
What it does, reaction by reaction
Other Neurotransmitter Synthesis Amino Acid & Nitrogen Metabolism · Cytosol
L-Glutamate -> GABA + CO2
Converts Glutamate into GABA CO2
› Notes
B6 deficiency (e.g. isoniazid without pyridoxine) lowers GABA and causes seizures. Anti-GAD antibodies occur in stiff-person syndrome and type 1 diabetes.
