Converts Acetoacetate NADH H+ into D-beta-hydroxybutyrate NAD+

Notes

Mitochondrial D-β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase interconverts the two principal ketone bodies. The mitochondrial NADH/NAD+ ratio determines their ratio: high NADH generated by β-oxidation favors D-β-hydroxybutyrate.

Converts D-beta-hydroxybutyrate NAD+ into Acetoacetate NADH H+

Notes

Mitochondrial D-β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase oxidizes D-β-hydroxybutyrate to acetoacetate. This produces one NADH, and the reaction direction in extrahepatic tissue is favored by the local mitochondrial redox state.
